Sibling September
We held a virtual turning competition in September 2020 (as we couldn't meet face-to-face due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic). The title was "Sibling September", and the theme was "Make a matching pair". Here are the results.
The competition was judged independently and anonymously by John Buck and Jon Verrall. We were judging on four categories: Brief, Form, Function and Finish. The committee decided not to publish the scores, but to show the entry photographs and a summary of the judges' comments for each entry. We received a total of 4 entries.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brief | Form | Function | Finish | ||
| Adrian King | ![]() | Brief is well met with some variety and ingenuity; Band designating the salt mill leaves the pepper pot seeming incomplete Well matched pair; good sharp contrast of the woods used | Looks good although perhaps the liming could be more pronounced A little chunky, could possibly be a little bit more delicate. You could not miss them on a table. Complex construction successfully completed | Nicely balanced and shapely. A pleasing level of skill displayed Smooth flow; Well proportioned | Appears well finished Well finished - no visible marks and nicely polished. Perhaps a little too heavily dependent on finishing off the lathe for a strictly turned piece |
| Neil Innes | ![]() | Brief is well met - if with an elegant but rather straightforward interpretation Very decorative | Works well but probably too fragile for use other than as a pair of ornaments Decorative use only; a well turned display piece showing great accuracy | Shapes work well with pleasing lines and a high level of skill displayed A very fine decorative matching pair | Very difficult to produce a fine finish on such a thin stem Difficult to judge - photos appear out of focus. No apparent blemishes |
| Graham Mee | ![]() | An appropriate display; well designed Brief met but design rather straightforward, although pleasing use of well-figured wood | Difficult to finish with a knot in the middle but the outside looks very good A greater degree of complexity would improve the pieces | Well proportioned; lines flow well but aesthetically rather bland Well balanced and aesthetically pleasing | Very well finished; consistent finish Well finished: no visible tooling marks; consistent appearance |
| Nick Laking (winner) | ![]() | Brief very well interpreted with imagination, flair and a high level of skill. Brass or glass holders would enhance the pieces and protect the wood Well-balanced pair | Near perfect 'as is'. Blemishes in the wood a slight distraction Finely detailed | Great design Well-proportioned with very pleasing lines. A most attractive pair | Very well finished: no visible tooling marks; consistent appearance with a pleasing and appropriate soft sheen effect Good finish |
