Happy Holidays

We held a virtual turning competition in December 2020 (as we couldn't meet face-to-face due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic). The title was "Happy Holidays", and the theme was "Make something Christmassy". Here are the results.

The competition was judged independently and anonymously by Dave Gunner and Pat O'Connell. They were judging on four categories: Brief, Form, Function and Finish. The committee have decided not to publish the scores, but to show the entry photographs and a summary of the judges' comments for each entry. We received a total of 7 entries.

BriefFormFunctionFinish
Neil InnesCracker by Neil InnesVery Christmassy
Meets the brief very well; a Xmas cracker personfies Xmas and I like the addition of the acrylic tube and blue lights
Well made
Lovely display piece to put out at Xmas
Good proportions
I really like the form it looks like a perfect cracker
Finished well
The finish seems ok on the outside the pictures seem to show a small chip where it connect to the tube and also I suspect the hollowed ends were done using a forstner bit as you can see the centre point
Richard Peers (winner)Candelabra by Richard PeersNot only for Christmas
Perfect it has a proper Xmas feel about it
Very ornate and functional
Again absolutely perfect; I love the proportion and it has the perfect look of a candelabra and it doesn't feel like an over elaborate candle stick holder at all
Good proportions
I love it
Well finished
I think the dark colour along with the gold gilt looks amazing
Nick LakingChristmas Pudding by Nick LakingVery Christmassy, everyone likes a Christmas pudding
Another one that has smashed it
A good display piece
Another piece that would look great on display at Xmas
Well thought out and designed
I think it looks really nicely proportioned
Good effective finish
The finish looks really nice
Liz LockSnowmen by Liz LockTypical Christmassy piece
Nothing says Xmas more than a snowman
Good table decoration
As Xmas displays they're perfect but I love the lights in the large ones and they would make great night lights for kids
Well made and good proportion
I love the different shapes and sizes along with the colours and hats and the small carrot noses - and the spheres look brilliant
Nice finish
The finish looks really good with the addition of what looks like ebonising and gold gilt cream as well as the mixed colour palette of red white black and the natural wood
Graham MeeSoldier by Graham MeeNice Chrismassy soldier
Simply brilliant
A lovely piece of wood
Another fine display piece
Well thought out and stands well
I think proportionally it looks very good and the use of faux fur is good as well
Nicely finished to show the soldier at its best
If I was being fussy I'd say you can see the plain dowel holding the drum in place but I'm intrigued by the colours on the drum it looks like some kind of spectraply
Peter WadeThree Wise Men by Peter WadeVery simple design, good idea
If 3 wise men doesn't meet the Xmas brief I don't know what does lol
Very rustic
They look pretty big but I'm sure they suit a purpose for what they were intended
Simple and in proportion
I love that they have a neck so they don't look like snowmen and it gives them shoulders for a cape
The finish seems rustic still some live edge and a few facial tool marks but I love em anyway
Alice TyrrellTwo Soldiers by Alice TyrrellA popular soldier design
I really like these nutcracker soldiers they look very authentic
Good proportions, stand well
Honestly I could see these on any mantelpiece taking pride of place at Xmas
Well turned
I really like them and think they've come out very well
Could have had brighter colours
If I'm being fussy the base would've looked better IMO with some colour
